Donetsk is a fairly gloomy and polluted city, best known for football, coal-miners and Ukraine’s Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.
If people do visit Donetsk, it is usually for business, although, interestingly, back in 1875 it was a Welshman, John Hughes, who founded the first metallurgical plant here. The city’s current name came into being only in 1961, and before that it was called Stalino after the infamous Soviet despot. Donetsk has two decent hotels and a number of restaurants worth sampling.
